HP Officejet 7000 (E809a), 7000 Special Edition (E809b), and 7000 Advantage (E809c) Wide Format Printers – The Printer is not Found on the Network During a Wired Network (Ethernet) Installation in Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7

Issue

During a wired network (Ethernet) installation through an access point, the product is not found on the network. The access point is a router, a modem, or a network gateway. A message such as, ‘Search complete, no configured printers found ‘ or ‘Printer not found ‘ displays on the computer.
Solution
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue. When one of the steps resolves the issue, there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
Step one: Check the Ethernet cable
Follow these steps to inspect the Ethernet cable.
Examine the network (Ethernet) cable attached to the back of the product and make sure it is not a phone cable (Ethernet cables and phone cables look similar).
Figure 1: Ethernet cable (do not use a phone cable)

  1. Make sure the Ethernet cable is inserted into the Ethernet jack and not a phone jack. The correct jack is indicated by the Ethernet icon ( ).
NOTE: Make sure that the Ethernet cable is not connected to a router port designated for Internet access. Consult your router’s documentation for more information.
Step two: Temporarily disable Windows Firewall
NOTE: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, skip to the “Temporarily disable third-party firewalls” step in this document.
Windows XP has firewall settings that can interfere with the HP software installation. If you are running Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) or later, skip this step and proceed to the next step. If you are running Windows XP SP1 or earlier, follow these steps to temporarily disable the firewall.
NOTE: To check the version of Windows you are running click Start , right-click My Computer , click Properties . The Windows version is shown in the General tab in the System Properties window.
  1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router, modem, or gateway.
NOTE: If you are unsure where the router, modem, or gateway is for the networked product, consult your system administrator.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start , and then click Control Panel . The Control Panel opens in a new window.
  3. Double-click Security Center ( ). Windows Security Center opens in a new window.
  4. Click Windows Firewall ( ). The Windows Firewall Settings dialog box opens.
  5. From the General tab, select Off (not recommended) ( ), and then click OK .
Step three: Temporarily disable third-party firewalls
Firewalls from third-party firewall vendors, such as Symantec, McAfee, or ZoneAlarm, can prevent the HP software from successfully installing over a network connection. Follow these steps to temporarily disable any third-party firewalls.
  1. Make sure the Ethernet cable is disconnected from the router, modem, or gateway.
  2. Look in the lower-right corner of the computer (systems tray) to find the icon representing the third-party software.
NOTE: The appearance of the icon varies depending on the manufacturer of the software.

  3. Right-click the icon for the third-party software, and then click Disable .
NOTE: The option to disable the software might not be called “Disable .” Look for a similar menu option, such as Stop or Turn off .
Step four: Print a network configuration page
The Network Configuration page shows the network settings for the product. Follow these steps to print a network configuration page from the product.
  1. Press the Network button ( ) on the product control panel.

NOTE: Your product’s printed configuration page might look different that the example page.
  2. Set the page aside to reference in the next steps.
Step five: Open the Embedded Web Server
An Embedded Web Server is an interface, like a Web page, that allows you to view product status information, change settings, and manage the product from your computer. Follow these steps to open the EWS.
  1. Open a Web browser (for example, Internet Explorer or Firefox).
  2. In the browser’s address line, type the IP address listed on the network configuration page that you printed in a previous step, and then press Enter . Type this value exactly as it displays on the network configuration page.

Step six: Assign the product a static IP address
Many third-party software firewalls reassign a new Internet Protocol (IP) address to the HP product, which interferes with network installation. An IP address uniquely identifies the product on the network.
Follow these steps to assign an unchanging static IP address to the product through the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  1. In the EWS screen, click the Networking tab.
  2. Click Wired (802.3) .
  3. Under IP Address Configuration , click Manual IP , and then in the Manual IP Address box, type an IP address with the same values in the first three sets of digits (subnet values) as the product’s IP address (listed on the network configuration page) and a higher value (between 1 and 254) in the fourth set of digits (DHCP range). This creates a static IP address on the same subnet, but outside the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DCHP) range.
For example, if the product’s original IP address is 192.168.0.1 , assign the static IP address to 192.168.0.200 .
Figure 7: Example IP address – DHCP values shown

Figure 8: Example static IP address with DHCP values modified

NOTE: Do not type the static IP address in the example. Enter a static IP address based on the IP address for your product.
  4. Enter the Subnet Mask and the Default Gateway settings as they appear on the network configuration page.
  5. Click Apply to save the new settings, and then click Exit or close the browser to exit the EWS.
Step seven: Uninstall the HP software
Even if the HP software installation failed, the product software might have partially installed on the computer. Follow these steps to remove the HP software, and then continue to the next step to reinstall it.
  1. Open the software uninstaller.
Windows XP: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click All Programs , click HP , double-click the folder for the HP product, and then click Uninstall . The software uninstaller opens in a new window.
Windows Vista and Windows 7: On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon ( ), click All Programs , click HP , double-click the folder for the HP product, and then click Uninstall . The software uninstaller opens in a new window.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the software.
CAUTION: If asked to remove shared files, click No . Other programs that use these files might not work if you delete the files.
Step eight: Reinstall the HP software
Use one of the following methods to install the software.
Method one: Download and install the HP software

  2. Turn the product on.
  3. Open a new window to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page:

  7. Read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
  8. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
  9. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  10. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Method two: Reinstall the HP software using the product CD
Follow these steps to reinstall the software with the CD that came with the product.
NOTE: If you get any firewall messages during installation, click unblock or accept or the installation will fail.
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD drive of the computer. The software installer starts automatically.
If the installer does not start automatically, click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the software.
Step nine: Test the printer functionality
Follow these steps to test the product functions correctly.
  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.
  2. Print any document to make sure the printer works.
  3. Restart Windows Firewall and any third-party firewall programs in the same way you disabled them earlier in this document.
  4. Print a document again to make sure that the functions still work after restarting the firewalls.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , see the next step.
Step ten: If the product does not function, configure the ports (optional)
If the product does not work, manually configure the ports to the appropriate IP address.
NOTE: Perform these steps only if the product does not work.
  1. Open the Control Panel .
